Bodega Bay California

The rain stopped just in time for our planned overnight to this coastal town. Neither one of us had been here before. It’s a cute town with gorgeous scenery located in Sonoma County. We arrived in the evening and braved some cold and wind to take shots of the bay, town and harbor.

This is shot from the breakwater at Spud Harbor.

The town is best known for being the site of the Alfred Hitchcock film, The Birds. Fortunately the birds are, in reality, cute and pretty.

We had breakfast at The Tides at the Wharf, a restaurant and inn that replaced the original where The Birds was filmed. The new building is lovely with high ceilings and beautiful wood open beams with tongue-and-groove roof paneling. The tables overlook the calm bay where we watched ducks and, unfortunately, a drone. I didn’t photograph that, but it flew in and hovered over the birds, scaring a few into relocating. It was probably somebody wanting close up photos of the birds. Wait until there are hundreds of amateur drones hovering out there. It will be hideously ugly. I have some science fiction short stories I’m working on about drones, just taking a look at some of the unintended consequences of the coming nightmare, should they be approved for widespread use.

At Bodega Head, the cliffs block tumultuous waves that make for gorgeous photography. It’s a state park with bathrooms and parking and has a high accessibility-to-beauty ratio.

There is a famous tree out there, famous in the sense that it is oft photographed. It’s really quite striking. As a friend of mine pointed out, it’s easy to see which way the wind usually blows.

Cutting back to Highway 101, we passed by beautiful working farms, a lot of them organic dairy. I even saw a farm that participates in the organic cooperative whose milk I buy: Organic Valley.

Sorry  I missed a few posts. I really didn’t have any new photos. It was raining continuously, so I couldn’t get out. The Bodega Bay trip was the first dry day in a couple weeks. I’ll be able to milk these shots for a few more posts, so please do continue to check in on Mondays and Fridays. I will be getting more photos!

Have a great weekend.

Child’s play

My previous photos mostly concealed the fact that there were a lot of people out there with me enjoying a gorgeous winter day. Santa Cruz tends to be warmer in the winter than where I live, down in the valley near the San Francisco bay.

So here is the human element of Natural Bridges, the best part–children.

Mind you, I wasn’t trying to get photos of children or people at all. When I saw this image though, I was glad I accidentally caught this little girl at the edge of my frame. Next time I’ll pay more attention to the human element in the composition as I think it adds a lot of interest to the scenery.

Another accidental shot, I love how the dad is kicking his foot in the air.childs-play-at-natural-bridges-2

That’s the beauty of digital photography and Lightroom–you can take a lot of photos and get some surprising captures that way.

I hope you are having a nice weekend!

Natural Bridges in three tones

So glad I went out on Thursday during the break in the storms. Wow, we are getting inundated with rain in California. Bye bye drought! (Still on water rations.) I hope it fills the aquifers, I mean, this really will except for those places that collapsed them by pumping during the drought.

Anyhow, while inside, I’ve been playing with photos. Still enjoying the batch from Natural Bridges.

The tones are quite different here, sorry, but what can I do? I have to play around with images, trying different things, until I get out and refill my camera.

Oh, I had fun with this one…

Bean Hollow State Beach revisited

I went out to get you some new photos of this gorgeous state beach.

bean-hollow-december-1

The winds were really high. My  hair needs to be cut because it kept blowing in front of the lens, even the telephoto lens! Thanks to my hair, I was partly blind, and stepped into a bit of wet sand in one of the tide pools. I sank all the way up to my ankles. I’ll be cleaning out the car for a while and the sneakers need a wash.bean-hollow-december-2

I took my Christmas present out for a spin, the ND filter. It was pretty chaotic between not knowing what I was doing, and extremely high winds. I managed a few good shots, not necessarily with the filter.bean-hollow-december-3

The light! Oh, it was so pretty.

bean-hollow-december-4

When I came home to process I was surprised to see a hexagonal flare in a lot of the photos. Googled it, apparently it’s the aperture which can show up when there’s an intense source of light. That has never happened to me before, and it happened on both lenses. I am not showing any of those. I was able to crop them out of the next two images.

In terms of composition, this isn’t much but it is one of my favorites. I added a little vignette which I think helped the composition a lot, but it’s still just waves. But I love those waves!

Again, the sunlight was so soft on these rocks.bean-hollow-december-8

This was my other favorite: bean-hollow-december-9

A last one with that sunset light starting to add pink to the water.bean-hollow-december-10

I’ll have a few more from Bean Hollow and from San Gregorio State Beach on Monday. The wind kept away all the campfires, so the air was clear. We had a few clouds from the last storm. I love winter photography so far.

Have a nice weekend.

New photos

Hello. I have been sporadic in posting, unable to get out to shoot and a tad uninspired by what I have in the archives, but tonight I went out at sunset to take a few shots.

I went by this tree earlier in the day and thought I have to get back and shoot that at sunset. I planned to take it the other way but there was no great place to stand, and it’s in the middle of the road. There was a nice pull-out area to park facing the other direction, plus the sky was actually prettier in that direction.

Why did I suddenly and finally get motivated to get out and shoot? I did some thinking and realized I want to go to very scenic places where people go on photography tours. I don’t want to do a tour, I want to do it myself. We have a ton of stuff to shoot in Northern California. I’m really lucky to live here, and it’s time I started taking advantage of it. But I have to plan for it. It won’t just happen, I noticed.

I looked up a beach that a photographer takes people to, and he suggested bringing ND filters. I’ve been wanting one so I can blur moving water, that’s it. Nothing fancy. So I asked for an inexpensive one for my wide angle lens for not much money for Christmas. My husband also did the research, which is a big part of the gift. I looked at the ones Leanne Cole talks brilliantly about. Those look amazing. I am not ready for those, though. I want to keep things simple and not invest in more equipment for a while. I need to get out and use my excellent wide angle lens (several birthday and Christmas presents worth there). I want to put the emphasis on taking photos now. I have enough stuff.

So the other part of my Christmas present is that my husband will go with me to a couple beach outings and…drum roll…to Yosemite in the winter! (We’re going to stay in a hotel outside the park, not camp.)

The advantage of going on our own is that we can wait for the ideal conditions because we aren’t booked in advance.

On my way home from my photography adventure tonight, I had to stop and take a picture of the moon.

Moving toward the new year

After a bit of a hiatus, I am back writing again with new goals. And I managed to take a photo today. Our neighbor’s redwood is a frequent subject. I love it.

redwood-at-sunset-1

In addition to writing, I’ve been thinking about what I want to do next with photography, and I think I know what that is. I want to start taking trips to parks in California and the western region, state and national. I think this will be great during the winter. We are starting to get snow in the mountains, which is wonderful. I also want to find one place nearby that I like and work on taking just the right shot there by going there often.

The thing that I seem to shoot a lot is the Campbell water tower. Maybe I’ll figure out something new with the tower. I’d like to get it with people walking there. I think the really tall ones would look nice with someone walking near the base. I’ll have to get my husband to go with me.

I’m interested in getting a tree-lined lane. I have seen some amazing photos of tree-lined lanes especially after rain. I have to find one though!

With writing I’m working on two new books. One is my main goal, a romantic suspense, but I let myself work on the other one, a romance science fiction, when I’m in the mood. This is a really different way to work for me but so far it’s working really well. I don’t seem to have any trouble switching between them. I get ideas for each of them and then I jot them down. Or if I feel like hanging out with one set of characters, I work on writing in that book. We’ll see if I can keep it up. I don’t have a time goal for the s.f. so that should help.

After a long limbo/lull, it’s nice to be excited about writing and photography again.

I hope you are having a nice season so far. I’d love to hear from you, so please say hello!

Pretty sunset

Happy start of the week. I was out doing yard work this evening and tried to resist grabbing my camera at sunset, but it grew so pretty I threw aside my gloves and dashed inside for my camera.

I’m glad I did, and I hope you are too!

Have a great week.

Fall colors

We arrived in the mountains just in time to snap a few photos of autumn colors.

I’ve signed on for a higher level of volunteer work for my Romance Writer’s of America chapter. I’ll be turning over one or two other duties to take on a board position. I think it’s healthy in volunteer organizations to have some turnover of duties. I was doing the website maintenance and it looks like another member is willing to take that on. It will be interesting to see what she does with it. Also to see if my procedures make sense. I’ll find that out soon enough. Nothing like having someone use your procedures to find out what’s unclear.

autumn-colors-2

Visiting up here in the mountains is special to me because I grew up here. I have very strong connections to place. It’s almost physical. Occasionally I’ll travel somewhere and feel I need to go back, but my strongest bonds are to the Sierra mountains around Lake Tahoe. I have friends I grew up with who feel the same — and they live here full time. It’s nice to see them  and reminisce.

autumn-colors-3

As for “work,” I’m making progress on the planning stages of the sequel to the novella that is on submission. I’ve decided to plan for one complete book rather than a trilogy as I thought. There will be an opening for further books should the first two prove popular.

autumn-colors-4

I’m planning to finish the planning…LOL…in October so I can write a fast draft of the novel during National Novel Writing Month (NaNo). Are you doing NaNo? If so, find me as a buddy if you like.

What do you look forward to doing, enjoying or accomplishing this week?

No matter what you are planning to do, I hope you have a good week with good health.
